Oregon Quitclaim Deed

About the Baker County Clerk

Baker County is eastern Oregon's high desert and mountain country — Hells Canyon carves its eastern edge, the Elkhorn and Wallowa Mountains rise to the west, and Baker City anchors a landscape that once fueled the biggest gold rush in the Pacific Northwest. These days the economy runs more on ranching, timber, and travelers headed for Hells Canyon National Recreation Area than on gold, and the county's population has held remarkably steady for decades. Outside Baker City, the county is mostly open country and small crossroads communities, so the Clerk's office handles a modest, steady stream of filings rather than a big-city rush.

Cities and Communities Served

Recording jurisdiction runs countywide, not by city limits — if the property sits anywhere within Baker County, this is the Clerk’s office that will accept the deed. That includes:

Incorporated cities: Baker City (county seat), Greenhorn, Haines, Halfway, Huntington, Richland, Sumpter, and Unity.

Unincorporated communities: Bridgeport, Durkee, Hereford, Homestead, Keating, New Bridge, Oxbow, Rye Valley, Sparta, and Whitney.

How to File a Document

  1. Prepare Your Document: Make sure your deed meets Oregon's formatting and content requirements before you file.
  2. Get It Notarized: Have the document signed in front of an Oregon notary public or other authorized official. No notary nearby in Baker City? Oregon allows remote online notarization — you can have your Baker County deed notarized online by an Oregon-commissioned notary instead.
  3. Meet Oregon's First-Page Requirements: Oregon law requires your deed's first page to show the title, grantor and grantee names, the true consideration, and an address for tax statements. If your document doesn't already include this, you'll need to attach a cover sheet, which adds $5 to the recording fee.
  4. Record It: You can file in person or by mail with the Baker County Clerk's office.
  5. Pay the Recording Fee: Oregon recording fees are set individually by each county and change periodically — check the current fee schedule or call the office to confirm the exact amount before filing.
  6. Keep Your Receipt: Your recorded document (or a certified copy) is your proof of filing.
